A First look at . . .
Making the site accessable
- I used visCheck to test my site for color blind people to see what it would look like. Although the masthead was virtually missing, the rest of the site was readable.
- I then changed the links to bold, and changed the color to something contrasting so that a person with color vision problems would still be able to distinguish the difference.
- Next I added title tags to the links.
- Then I added access keys to all of the navigation links.
- As I am not using images, I have not added alt text -- but once I do add an image to the site, Dreamweaver automatically asks for one, so I automatically add it.
Relection:
I found this to be an interesting subject, as I have worked with challenged people in the past. This is an area that should be paid more attention to, as in general, about 11% of the people using the internet have some sort of special need. In order to accommodate them, as a web developers/designers, we need to be aware of this and make our sites available to them in such a way that they will want to come back and visit the site often.
